ST. LOUIS, MO – Christopher Willis, 39, admitted Wednesday to deliberately torching the home of his former girlfriend in St. Louis County, putting three lives at risk. Willis pleaded guilty to one felony count of maliciously damaging or destroying by means of fire in U.S. District Court, confessing to the dangerous act that could have easily turned deadly.
According to court documents, Willis illegally entered the residence on Nero Drive in unincorporated St. Louis County in the early hours of April 29th. Once inside, he ignited clothing in the basement, quickly escalating into a full-blown fire. His ex-girlfriend, along with her daughter and aunt, were all asleep inside at the time.
Fortunately, the quick activation of a fire alarm roused the woman, allowing her to evacuate herself, her child, and her aunt before the blaze consumed the home. Emergency crews from multiple fire protection districts – Black Jack, Spanish Lake, Florissant, Metro-North, and Ferguson – responded to the chaotic scene, battling the flames and ensuring the safety of the neighborhood.
The investigation quickly pointed to Willis, and the St. Louis Regional Bomb and Arson Unit, working alongside the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), built a solid case. While the motive wasn’t explicitly detailed in the Department of Justice release, the timing and circumstances strongly suggest a crime of passion and revenge.
Under the terms of a plea agreement reached between prosecutors and Willis’s attorney, both sides have agreed to recommend a five-year prison sentence. That’s a lenient offer considering the potential for far more severe charges had anyone been injured or killed. Assistant U.S. Attorney Ryan Finlen is leading the prosecution.
Willis is currently awaiting sentencing, scheduled for January 30, 2024. He’ll have plenty of time to reflect on the devastating consequences of his actions, and the sheer luck that prevented this act of arson from becoming a tragedy. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on the sentencing.
