SYRACUSE, NEW YORK – A 48-year-old Nigerian man has been sentenced to six months in jail for illegally re-entering the United States. Chukwudi Olisemeka, a citizen of Nigeria, was found guilty of the crime and sentenced accordingly.
According to the United States Attorney’s Office, Olisemeka was removed from the United States on June 19, 2008, and was subsequently re-admitted on multiple occasions. However, on May 7, 2017, a Border Patrol agent discovered Olisemeka on a bus headed to New York City, leading to his arrest.
As part of his guilty plea on July 17, 2017, Olisemeka admitted to being a citizen of Nigeria and to re-entering the United States without proper authorization. The prosecution argued that Olisemeka’s actions were a clear violation of federal law.
Olisemeka’s sentence was handed down by federal authorities, who took into account the severity of his crime. He will serve his six-month prison term before being transferred to the custody of the Department of Homeland Security for removal proceedings.
The investigation into Olisemeka’s activities was conducted by the United States Border Patrol, with the assistance of Assistant U.S. Attorney Edward P. Grogan, who prosecuted the case.
