Tax Cheat: Arkansas Man Pleads Guilty to Filing False Tax Return
Clarence A. Joles, Sr., of Texarkana, Arkansas, pleaded guilty to filing a false tax return with the IRS on which he did not report all of the income he earned from his business, Rock Hard Paving.
Joles, the owner of Rock Hard Paving, an asphalt paving business operated as a sole proprietorship, admitted to depositing the company’s gross receipts into approximately nine different bank accounts.
However, Joles intentionally withheld records from some of those accounts, which caused his tax preparer not to have access to Rock Hard Paving’s true income. As a result, a false 2015 personal tax return was filed with the IRS, underreporting more than $1 million in receipts.
An investigation by IRS-Criminal Investigation uncovered Joles’ scheme, leading to his guilty plea.
Clarence A. Joles, Sr., faces a maximum penalty of three years in prison for filing a false tax return, as well as a period of supervised release, monetary penalties, and restitution. A federal district court judge will determine the sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.
This case was prosecuted by Assistant Chief Greg Tortella and Trial Attorney Isaiah Boyd, III of the Tax Division.
