STOCKTON, CA – Clayton Howard, 47, is headed to federal prison for seven years and two months after being convicted of being a felon in possession of ammunition. The sentence, handed down today, underscores the federal government’s ongoing crackdown on repeat offenders who flout gun laws.
The case originated from a raid on Howard’s Stockton residence on April 10, 2020. Investigators weren’t looking for a knitting circle. The search turned up a disturbing cache: thirteen different types of ammunition, spent shell casings, disassembled firearm parts, two bulletproof vests, and firearm silencers. As if that weren’t enough, authorities also found 11 grams of methamphetamine stashed within the property.
Howard’s history is, frankly, extensive. Court documents reveal he’s a convicted felon 16 times over. That lengthy record automatically disqualifies him from legally possessing any ammunition. The discovery of the ammunition, combined with his prior convictions, sealed his fate.
The investigation wasn’t a solo effort. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) led the charge, working alongside the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office, and the Stockton Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Cameron L. Desmond successfully prosecuted the case, building a solid case against Howard.
This prosecution falls under the umbrella of an Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) operation. OCDETF is a multi-agency, prosecutor-led initiative designed to dismantle the most dangerous criminal organizations operating within the United States.
