Carjacking with Firearm Allegations in Elyria, Ohio
On January 27, 2022, a brazen carjacking took place in Elyria, Ohio, at a gas station where a victim was pumping gas. Clinton Lindsey, 24, and Trayqwan Dunlap, 19, both from Cleveland, Ohio, approached the victim, brandished a pistol, and threatened them. The defendants then entered the stolen vehicle and fled.
Elyria Police Officers responded to the scene and located the vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed. The officers witnessed the vehicle crash into a pillar in the downtown Elyria area. After exiting the vehicle on foot, the defendants were later apprehended by police officers. A Glock .45 caliber semiautomatic pistol was found in the stolen vehicle.
Acting U.S. Attorney Michelle M. Baeppler stated, ‘As the number of carjackings and other violent crimes persist, we will continue to marshal our federal resources and focus on apprehending and prosecuting those individuals that endanger our community.’
FBI Special Agent in Charge Eric B. Smith added, ‘Carjacking is a borderless, brazen crime that can affect anyone at any time, often without provocation. This indictment underscores our longstanding partnership with the Elyria Police Department and the commitment of the Federal Bureau of Investigation to protect the American public.’
Clinton Lindsey and Trayqwan Dunlap are facing carjacking and brandishing a firearm during a crime of violence charges. The indictment was returned on March 3, 2022. An indictment is only an allegation, and the defendants are entitled to a fair trial in which it will be the government’s burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Scott Zarzycki is prosecuting the case. The investigation was conducted by the FBI and the Elyria Police Department. An exact sentence or outcome has not been determined yet, as the case is still ongoing. The maximum sentence for carjacking and brandishing a firearm during a crime of violence can exceed the statutory maximum, depending on the defendant’s prior criminal record, role in the offense, and other factors.
