In a shocking display of violence, Cody James Dimmett, 29, was sentenced to 15 years in federal prison for his role in an armed assault on law enforcement officers.
According to court documents, on May 25, 2021, Dimmett, a convicted felon, fled from law enforcement in Memphis, Tennessee, after a high-speed chase that spanned over 120 miles per hour.
During the pursuit, Dimmett fired multiple rounds from an SKS rifle, striking a federal officer in the arm. He then fled the scene in the officer’s vehicle, leading officers on a wild goose chase through multiple states before finally crashing in Palestine, Arkansas.
Dimmett was later apprehended after a several hour-long standoff. His brazen actions put numerous law enforcement officers in harm’s way, and his punishment reflects the severity of his crimes.
Dimmett was sentenced to 183 months in federal prison, to be followed by five years of supervised release. There is no parole in the federal system.
United States Attorney Kevin G. Ritz praised the efforts of law enforcement in bringing Dimmett to justice, saying, “This significant prison sentence justly reflects the severity of the crimes this defendant committed. I am glad we could hold him to account for his armed assault on law enforcement officers.”
The case was investigated by the Southaven Police Department, DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office, FBI, Memphis Police Department, Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia – State and Local Police Departments.
