Brockton Man Charged with Computer Intrusion
BOSTON – A 25-year-old man from Brockton, Massachusetts, has been charged with intentionally causing damage to a protected computer without authorization in 2018.
Colby Anderson, a former Network Operations Center Technician at Blueport Wireless, was terminated from his position in July 2018. However, he used his former colleagues’ account login information to delete approximately 120 customer configuration profiles following his termination. This action resulted in widespread internet service issues at customer facilities.
The incident occurred in August 2018, and Anderson was arrested and charged by complaint in October 2018. He was released on conditions pending further investigation. According to the charging documents, Anderson used his colleagues’ login information to access the company’s system and delete customer profiles.
Anderson, who is presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, faces a sentence of no greater than 10 years in prison, up to three years of supervised release, and a fine of $250,000 or twice the gross gain or loss.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts and the Federal Bureau of Investigation made the announcement today. Assistant U.S. Attorney Mackenzie A. Queenin of Lelling’s Cybercrimes Unit is prosecuting the case.
The incident highlights the importance of network security and the consequences of unauthorized access to protected computers. The public should be aware of the risks associated with this type of crime and take necessary precautions to protect themselves.
The details contained in the charging documents are allegations, and the defendant’s guilt or innocence will be determined by a court of law.
