Colorado Man Gets Caught in Child Support Scam

Denver Man Faces Prison Time for Failing to Pay Child Support

Joe S. Romero, a 42-year-old man from Denver, Colorado, has pleaded guilty to failing to pay child support, a crime that carries a maximum penalty of 2 years’ imprisonment and a $250,000 fine.

According to court documents, Romero was ordered to pay $200 per month for his minor child beginning January 7, 1993. However, he had not made a child support payment since May 2011, leaving a total arrearage amount of $33,601.69 at the time of his plea hearing.

U.S. Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced the guilty plea, which was entered on August 2, 2013, before U.S. District Judge Karen E. Schreier. The investigation was conducted by the Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Inspector General, with the case being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas J. Wright.

At his sentencing hearing on October 21, 2013, Romero faces an additional year of custody upon revocation, a $100 assessment fee, and child support restitution amount owing at the time of sentencing. He was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshal pending sentencing.

The case serves as a reminder of the consequences of failing to meet one’s child support obligations. ‘This case highlights the importance of holding parents accountable for their financial responsibilities to their children,’ said U.S. Attorney Johnson.

As the investigation continues, it is clear that Romero’s failure to pay child support has had a significant impact on his child’s life. ‘The amount owed in back child support is staggering, and it is a testament to the importance of holding individuals accountable for their actions,’ said Assistant U.S. Attorney Wright.
