WASHINGTON D.C. – Robert Gieswein, 26, of Woodland Park, Colorado, will spend the next four years in federal prison for his brutal role in the January 6th, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol. Gieswein was sentenced to 48 months after being convicted of two counts of assaulting, resisting, or impeding officers – cops who were simply trying to defend democracy from a mob. This wasn’t a protest; it was a full-blown assault.
The feds detailed how Gieswein, decked out in paramilitary gear and carrying a baseball bat, initially linked up with members of the Proud Boys extremist group in D.C. He was marked with orange duct tape as a “friendly” – a chilling indicator of the pre-planned chaos. He then actively joined the surge towards the Capitol, pushing against police barricades and spewing violent rhetoric, making it clear he was there to cause trouble.
Court documents show Gieswein didn’t stop at pushing. He deployed an aerosol irritant – essentially pepper spray – directly at U.S. Capitol Police officers, attempting to disable them as he and other rioters forced their way inside. Once inside the Rotunda, he physically engaged with officers attempting to protect the Speaker of the House’s office. This wasn’t a peaceful demonstration; it was a coordinated attack on the heart of American government.
Judge Trevor N. McFadden didn’t mince words, handing down the 48-month sentence alongside 36 months of supervised release and a $2,000 restitution order to cover damages to the Capitol. The feds say this sentence sends a clear message: attacking law enforcement and attempting to overturn a legitimate election carries serious consequences. But will it be enough to deter others?
The FBI Denver and Washington Field Offices conducted the extensive investigation, with support from multiple agencies including the U.S. Attorney’s Offices for D.C. and Colorado, the Metropolitan Police Department, and the U.S. Capitol Police. This case is one of over 1,000 arrests made nationwide in connection with the January 6th breach, a stark reminder of the widespread extremist threat that continues to fester in this country.
While Gieswein is behind bars, the fight against domestic extremism is far from over. Federal prosecutors are still pursuing hundreds of other individuals involved in the riot, and the question remains: will enough be done to dismantle the networks that fueled this attack and prevent a repeat of January 6th? Grimy Times will continue to follow this story and expose the truth, no matter how ugly it gets.
