A Colorado Man’s 18-Month Sentence for Marijuana Trafficking Serves as a Warning to Would-Be Smugglers

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa – Hong Dinh Nguyen, a 42-year-old man from Commerce City, Colorado, has been sentenced to 18 months in federal prison for possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance.

Nguyen was arrested on April 22, 2023, after a traffic stop on Interstate 80. A strong odor of marijuana wafted from his vehicle, leading to the discovery of 34,424 grams of marijuana in heat-sealed bags in the trunk. Nguyen claimed he was transporting the marijuana to Minnesota in exchange for $6,300.

Following his incarceration, Nguyen will be subject to 3 years of supervised release. The federal prison system does not offer parole. United States Attorney Richard D. Westphal of the Southern District of Iowa made the announcement. The case was investigated by the Division of Narcotics Enforcement of the Iowa Department of Public Safety and the Iowa State Patrol.
