In a brazen attack, 31-year-old Yefferson Josue Pinzon Suarez bit a deportation officer’s forearm and hit him in the chest after being taken into custody on June 20th.
According to a motion filed by the U.S. Department of Justice, Pinzon Suarez, a resident of Maryland Heights, had been serving a sentence at the St. Louis County Jail before being transferred to the Robert A. Young Federal Building in downtown St. Louis. During the fingerprinting process, he refused to cooperate, leading to the violent altercation.
The incident occurred as part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative aimed at combating illegal immigration and transnational criminal organizations. The investigation was conducted by Immigrations and Customs Enforcement’s Department of Homeland Security, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Colleen Lang handling the prosecution.
A grand jury in U.S. District Court in St. Louis indicted Pinzon Suarez on Wednesday with one felony count of assaulting a federal employee. The charge carries significant penalties, and if convicted, Pinzon Suarez could face severe consequences.
The indictment serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement officials who work tirelessly to uphold the law and protect our communities. The attack on the ICE officer is a disturbing display of violence and disregard for authority.
Pinzon Suarez’s history with the law is complex, and his removal from the country was ordered by an immigration judge in March. The fact that he was able to carry out the attack on the officer raises questions about the effectiveness of our current immigration system and the need for stricter measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
As the case moves forward, it will be essential to examine the circumstances surrounding Pinzon Suarez’s removal from the country and the events leading up to the attack on the ICE officer. The community deserves answers and assurance that those responsible for such heinous crimes will be held accountable.
