Ikechi W Emeaghara, Armed Bank Robbery, Ohio 2016

A Columbus man is facing federal charges after allegedly brandishing a handgun during a daylight heist at a Key Bank on Frantz Road. Ikechi W. Emeaghara, 27, was indicted by a federal grand jury for the armed bank robbery that occurred October 21, 2016, marking the latest development in a violent crime that ended in gunfire and a hospital trip.

According to court documents, Emeaghara entered the northwest Columbus bank around 10 a.m., flashing what appeared to be a black semi-automatic handgun and demanding cash from tellers. He grabbed the money and fled the scene in a waiting vehicle, triggering a pursuit by Columbus Police officers who tracked him to a nearby business parking lot.

What happened next escalated fast. Emeaghara exited the car and pointed a gun directly at responding officers. They returned fire, striking him. He was rushed to a hospital for treatment of his injuries. Despite the violence, no officers were harmed in the confrontation.

Investigators tied Emeaghara to the robbery through evidence gathered at the scene and linked him to a string of similar incidents. A federal complaint charging him with armed bank robbery was filed November 1, 2016, by Task Force officers from the FBI, ATF, and Columbus Police. The indictment returned today confirms the federal case is moving forward.

Emeaghara now faces one count of armed bank robbery, a charge that carries a maximum penalty of 25 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Federal authorities stress that these are potential sentences set by Congress — actual penalties, if Emeaghara is convicted, will be determined by a judge. The defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.

Benjamin C. Glassman, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio, praised the joint work of Columbus Police, the FBI Cincinnati Field Office, and the ATF. The investigation remains active. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Salvador A. Dominguez and Deputy Criminal Chief Gary Spartis.
