A devastating blaze swept through the Conrad Ehrhardt & Co. tenant house in Ehrhardt, South Carolina, on the morning of March 10, 1909. The fire started in the bedroom, fueled by a bed of rotting cross-ties piled in the yard. The high winds made it nearly impossible for the watchman to contain the flames, and he was forced to sound the alarm to summon aid. Miraculously, the arrival of help soon after prevented the inferno from engulfing neighboring buildings.
