HOUSTON, TX – Kiran Andhavarapu, a 45-year-old from Conroe, Texas, is trading his financial spreadsheets for a federal prison bunk after being sentenced for a brazen scheme to steal nearly half a million dollars from his employer. Andhavarapu pleaded guilty back in February of 2017, but the consequences are now fully realized.
U.S. District Judge Keith P. Ellison delivered the sentence today: 20 months behind bars, followed by three years of supervised release. Judge Ellison didn’t mince words, explicitly stating Andhavarapu abused the trust placed in him as a financial controller at Weatherford – a betrayal that directly facilitated the theft.
The scheme was simple, yet effective. Andhavarapu opened fraudulent bank accounts under the name “EProduction Solutions,” a subsidiary of Weatherford, listing himself as the sole proprietor. He then systematically intercepted refund checks legitimately issued to Weatherford and EProduction Solutions, and deposited them into his illegally created accounts. A classic case of using inside access to line his own pockets.
The total take? A staggering $484,873.95. Andhavarapu admitted to the full amount as part of his guilty plea, hoping for leniency that clearly wasn’t forthcoming. The FBI investigation uncovered the full extent of his deception, leaving him with no place to hide.
“This wasn’t a momentary lapse in judgment,” stated Acting U.S. Attorney Abe Martinez. “This was a calculated and sustained effort to defraud his employer and enrich himself at their expense.” Andhavarapu will remain in custody while awaiting transfer to a Bureau of Prisons facility, the location of which will be determined at a later date.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Justin R. Martin successfully prosecuted the case, bringing Andhavarapu to justice.
