Convicted Felon Davis Guilty of Illegal Gun Possession in Chicago

CHICAGO — A brazen act of gun trafficking has landed 28-year-old Jamel Davis behind bars. The Auburn Gresham neighborhood’s streets have been safer following the conviction of Davis, who was caught selling firearms out of his own garage.

Davis was caught on July 23, 2014, engaging in a transaction involving two .38-caliber revolvers at his home in the 7600 block of South Seeley Avenue. His prior felony conviction rendered him unauthorized to possess or sell firearms.

This case emerged from a sweeping federal investigation that has purged over 100 guns from Chicago’s streets, a probe that involved controlled sales to law enforcement informants.

On Wednesday, the jury found Davis guilty of illegal possession of a firearm by a felon, a charge that could send him to prison for up to ten years. Sentencing is set for March 14, 2017, before U.S. District Judge Sara L. Ellis.

The investigation was led by Zachary T. Fardon, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, and George Lauder, Acting Special Agent in Charge of the Chicago Field Division of the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).

During the trial, evidence showed Davis handed over one firearm to a cooperating individual in his garage, unaware that the person was an undercover officer recording the exchange.

The prosecution is handled by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Nicole Kim and Carol Bell.
