MACON, Ga. – The grim reality of the streets of Athens was underscored this week as Anthony Holloway, a 28-year-old convicted felon, was sentenced to over nine years in prison for illegal gun possession. According to U.S. Attorney Charlie Peeler for the Middle District of Georgia, Holloway received 110 months in federal prison after pleading guilty on June 20th to one count of possessing a firearm as a convicted felon. The sentence carries no parole in the federal system.
On August 24, 2019, Athens police executed a search warrant at an apartment for heroin distribution and drug trafficking. Holloway was caught with a loaded Ruger LCP .380 semi-automatic pistol, cocaine, other drug paraphernalia, and cash. Holloway admitted the firearm’s ownership and his knowledge of the illegality of possessing it as a convicted felon.
U.S. District Judge C. Ashley Royal handed down the sentence, emphasizing that ‘It is illegal for convicted felons to possess firearms and the consequence is prison.’ Peeler added, ‘Our office will prosecute felons caught with guns,’ aiming to reduce violent crime and make communities safer. He thanked local law enforcement for their efforts.
Holloway’s case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a Department of Justice initiative that identifies and addresses the most pressing violent crime problems in a community. It also aligns with Project Guardian, an effort to reduce gun violence and enforce federal firearms laws. These programs focus on removing guns from felons’ hands and enhancing information-sharing among law enforcement agencies.
This case was investigated by the Athens-Clarke County Police Department and the Northeast Georgia Regional Drug Task Force. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kimberly Easterling prosecuted for the Government, with inquiries directed to Public Information Officer Pamela Lightsey at (478) 621-2603 or Public Affairs Director Melissa Hodges at (478) 765-2362.
