A convicted murderer has been sentenced after killing an inmate in a Colorado prison. Michael Lee Johnson, 32, was found guilty of second-degree murder in the death of Joseph Smith, 28, on March 10, 2024 at the Colorado State Penitentiary in Fremont County.
Johnson was serving a 25-year sentence for a 2018 murder conviction when he attacked Smith in the prison’s yard. Smith died from his injuries several days later.
Johnson was charged with first-degree murder, but pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of second-degree murder in a plea deal. He was sentenced to an additional 20 years in prison for the crime.
The case was investigated by the Colorado Department of Corrections and the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office.
