Ian Zephyrin, a 46-year-old Washington D.C. man, was indicted for a violent attack on multiple Metropolitan Police Officers that occurred on June 24, 2025. The incident began when Zephyrin entered a CVS store at 2009 8th Street NW, filled a reusable bag with merchandise, and left without paying. When confronted by officers, Zephyrin pulled out a knife and stabbed one officer in the elbow and forehead, causing a large laceration that required over 50 stitches.
The attack occurred after Zephyrin had attempted to steal a CVS manager’s cellphone and fled the scene, leading officers on a brief foot chase. As officers tried to detain him, Zephyrin brandished the knife at another officer and threw it at a third. The defendant remains in custody pending trial.
Zephyrin was indicted on nine counts, including assault with intent to kill while armed, aggravated assault while armed, and assault with a dangerous weapon. A felony status conference is set for May 13, 2026. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro stated that law enforcement officers put themselves on the line every day to keep communities safe and that her office will not hesitate to act when those sworn to protect are targeted.
The incident highlights the risks that police officers face daily and the importance of holding those who attack them accountable. The Metropolitan Police Department and the U.S. Attorney’s office are committed to protecting officers and ensuring that justice is served.
