Fort Myers Felon Sentenced to Federal Prison for Gun Crime
A hard-hitting crime has shaken the streets of Fort Myers, Florida. Coroy Dontavia Flournoy, a 40-year-old convicted felon, has been sentenced to three years and five months in federal prison for unlawfully possessing a loaded firearm.
According to court records, Flournoy was arrested on February 21, 2023, at a home in Fort Myers in connection with an active warrant. During the search of the residence, law enforcement discovered a loaded Glock handgun, multiple magazines, and several dozen rounds of ammunition hidden under the mattress of a bed.
Further investigation revealed that the firearm was linked to Flournoy through DNA analysis conducted by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. At the time of the offense, Flournoy was on Florida state probation for a firearm-related offense, making him a prohibited individual from possessing firearms or ammunition under federal law.
On February 28, 2024, Flournoy entered a guilty plea, paving the way for his sentencing. U.S. District Judge Sheri Polster Chappell handed down the three-year and five-month prison sentence, which also included an order for Flournoy to forfeit the firearm and ammunition he possessed during the offense.
The case was investigated by the Cape Coral Police Department, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Assistant United States Attorney Simon Eth prosecuted the case.
The sentencing marks a significant blow to the community, as part of a larger effort to reduce violent crime and gun violence. The Cape Coral Police Department, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are working together as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) to make neighborhoods safer for everyone.
