CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Ten men are off the streets of Corpus Christi following a coordinated crackdown on firearms and narcotics offenses, authorities announced today. The arrests are the result of a joint operation dubbed “Operation City Shield,” aimed at curbing violence and drug trafficking in the coastal city.
The first wave of indictments centers around illegal firearm possession. Tomas Perez, 30; David Lerma, 24; John Guerrero, 23; Omar Flores, 30; Dominic Suarez, 32; and Jesse Ramos, 29, all residents of Corpus Christi, are each facing separate charges as convicted felons illegally possessing firearms and ammunition. The potential penalty for each of these counts is a decade behind bars and a $250,000 fine.
Beyond the gun charges, the investigation also uncovered narcotics trafficking. Juan Sanchez, 24, of Corpus Christi, is charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm. Separately, Smiley Rodriguez, 32, also of Corpus Christi, stands accused of possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine – a charge that carries a maximum sentence of 20 years imprisonment and a $1 million fine if convicted.
A third indictment focuses on a suspected drug conspiracy. Roy Valent Jr., 31, and Arnold Valent, 29, both from Corpus Christi, are alleged to have conspired to possess with intent to distribute both a controlled substance and a controlled substance analogue. Adding to Roy Valent Jr.’s legal woes, he is also charged with being a felon in possession of firearms and ammunition.
Law enforcement moved swiftly yesterday, arresting Flores, Suarez, Sanchez, Guerrero, Perez, Ramos, and Roy Valent Jr. Detention hearings for these defendants are scheduled for Monday, November 14. Lerma and Rodriguez were already in custody at the time of the announcement and are expected to appear in federal court shortly.
This operation represents a coordinated effort by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; Drug Enforcement Administration; U.S. Marshals Service; Corpus Christi Police Department and the Texas Department of Public Safety. Assistant U.S. Attorney Lance Watt is leading the prosecution. “Operation City Shield” intends to continue identifying violent offenders and protecting the community, officials stated.
