Crank Sentenced: 51 Months for Gun, History of Violence

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Michael Angelo Crank, 44, is headed to federal prison after receiving a 51-month sentence for possessing a firearm despite a lengthy and violent criminal history. The sentencing, announced today by U.S. Attorney Russ Ferguson for the Western District of North Carolina, closes a case that began with a panicked 911 call and exposed a dangerous situation involving children.

On August 15, 2024, a woman identified as T.T. dialed 911, reporting Crank had discharged a firearm at a Charlotte residence. Responding officers from the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) arrived to find Crank, T.T., and three minor children present. T.T. stated that Crank fired the weapon during a heated argument while the children were inside the home – a reckless act that could have had devastating consequences.

A subsequent search of the residence revealed a disturbing arsenal. Investigators seized five spent 9mm shell casings, a 9mm Glock, model 17 semiautomatic pistol, a 30-round magazine, a 17-round magazine, a 9mm Hi-Point model C9 semiautomatic pistol, and a collection of various ammunition. Crucially, both seized firearms were later determined to be stolen. Home security footage corroborated T.T.’s account, clearly showing Crank pursuing her and her children into the front yard while brandishing a gun.

This wasn’t Crank’s first brush with the law. Court records reveal a pattern of violent and drug-related offenses. He’s previously been convicted of Assault on a Female and Felony Possession of Cocaine at the state level. Even more damning, he has a federal conviction from South Carolina for conspiracy and illegally possessing firearms while involved in drug trafficking – a clear indication of a dangerous and escalating pattern of behavior. This repeat offender clearly demonstrated a disregard for both the law and the safety of those around him.

On October 29, 2024, Crank pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He is currently in federal custody and will be transferred to a designated Federal Bureau of Prisons facility to begin serving his 51-month sentence, followed by a term of supervised release. The investigation was a joint effort between the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Charlotte Field Division and the CMPD, with prosecution handled by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Charlotte.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by convicted felons illegally possessing firearms. The collaboration between federal and local law enforcement agencies was critical in removing Crank from the streets and ensuring that he is held accountable for his actions. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on the ongoing efforts to combat gun violence in Charlotte and beyond.
