A woman from Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo has been sentenced to 20 months in prison for assaulting a tribal officer with a knife.

Crystal Torres, 29, was sentenced yesterday in federal court in Santa Fe, New Mexico, after pleading guilty to one count of assault with a dangerous weapon. The incident occurred on January 22, 2012, on Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo lands.

According to court filings, tribal officers were dispatched to Torres’s residence and attempted to apprehend her after she ran into traffic. However, Torres pulled out a hunting knife and advanced toward the victim, ignoring their commands to drop the knife.

The case was investigated by the Northern Pueblos Agency of the BIA’s Office of Justice Services and is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Elaine Y. Ramirez.

Torres was arrested on February 14, 2013, on an indictment charging her with assaulting a woman with a hammer and assaulting a man with a knife. However, she only pleaded guilty to the second count of the indictment.

The sentencing comes as a result of Torres’s actions on January 22, 2012, when she assaulted a tribal officer with a knife. The incident highlights the importance of public safety and the need for individuals to respect law enforcement.

Torres will serve 20 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release. The case serves as a reminder of the consequences of violent crime and the importance of upholding the law.
