In a brazen uprising, a band of 70,000 insurgents wreaked havoc on western Cuba, forcing the government to raise an army of 10,000 men to quell the rebellion. On August 9, 1907, the insurgency reached a boiling point in Pinar del Río province, where heavy fighting broke out. The rebels, estimated to be around 100, in their band, left a trail of destruction in their wake, looting the town of Las Lajas in Santa Clara province on August 29.
