WASHINGTON D.C. – A D.C. man is facing serious time after a jury found him guilty yesterday of dealing fentanyl and cocaine while illegally packing a firearm. Derrick Thomas Martin, 33, tossed a backpack packed with drugs and a loaded handgun out of an apartment window when cops came calling, according to federal prosecutors.
The bust went down November 25, 2024, at an address on Pennsylvania Avenue SE. Metro PD’s Criminal Apprehension Unit was there to serve an outstanding warrant from Maryland, where Martin had skipped trial on previous gun and drug charges. Instead of cooperating, Martin chucked a black backpack out the window. Inside, officers found roughly 700 grams of cocaine, over 5,700 fentanyl pills, and a Century Arms Micro Draco – a pistol that takes the same ammo as an AK-47.
U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro emphasized the danger Martin posed, stating the drugs and cash were stashed in an apartment where a child was sleeping near the weapon. Martin has a lengthy rap sheet with 31 prior arrests.
Martin now faces a minimum of 15 years behind bars when sentenced July 10, 2026, before Judge Trevor N. McFadden. The conviction includes charges for possession with intent to distribute both fentanyl and cocaine, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and possessing a firearm while committing a drug crime.
