WASHINGTON D.C. – Charles General, 29, is headed to federal prison for two years after cops found a stolen, loaded handgun in his coat pocket. The sentence came down today in D.C. District Court.
According to court papers, plainclothes D.C. Metro Police officers spotted General and a group smoking weed in a parking lot on Cedar Street SE back on October 13, 2023. When officers approached, the smell of marijuana was strong, and they told the group to stop.
A routine search turned up more than just pot. An officer felt the butt of a gun tucked into General’s coat. The search revealed a loaded Glock 30S .45 caliber pistol. Turns out, the Glock was stolen during a burglary at a gun shop in Springfield, Virginia.
This wasn’t General’s first brush with the law. He’d already been convicted in D.C. Superior Court for carrying a pistol without a license – the conviction that made possessing this gun a federal offense.
The bust was a joint effort between the Metropolitan Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). Assistant U.S. Attorney Emory V. Cole prosecuted the case as part of the Trump administration’s “Make D.C. Safe and Beautiful” initiative, a push to crack down on gun violence and prioritize federal firearms violations. General will also serve three years of supervised release after his prison term.
