U.S. Attorney for the District of Connecticut Vanessa Roberts Avery announced today that Jonathan Cruz-Carmona, 33, formerly incarcerated at the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) in Danbury, pleaded guilty to assault with a dangerous weapon in U.S. District Court in New Haven.
Cruz-Carmona is serving a federal sentence for murder with a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime. On December 18, 2023, while incarcerated at FCI Danbury, he used a homemade weapon fashioned from a broken pencil and two razor blades to assault another inmate. The victim suffered wounds to the chin and neck, but the injury was not life-threatening.
The assault took place as part of a brutal attack on a fellow inmate at the Danbury correctional facility. Cruz-Carmona’s use of a makeshift weapon has raised concerns about the violence that can occur in even the most secure of prisons.
The case is being investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Anastasia E. King. At sentencing, which has not been scheduled, Cruz-Carmona faces a maximum term of imprisonment of 10 years.
The incident highlights the ongoing issues of violence within the U.S. prison system. The use of makeshift weapons and the brutality of the attack have sparked outrage among prison reform advocates.
Cruz-Carmona’s plea comes as a stark reminder of the dangers that exist within the U.S. correctional system. The conviction serves as a warning to those who would seek to engage in violent behavior within the prison walls.
