A Monroeville resident and dentist has been charged with distributing a powerful painkiller outside of his medical practice.
PITTSBURGH, PA – Daniel Garner, 44, a dentist who practices in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was indicted by a federal grand jury in Pittsburgh on charges of distribution of Oxycodone, a Schedule II controlled substance, outside the usual course of professional practice.
The seven-count indictment, returned on June 7 and unsealed on Monday, alleges that Garner distributed Oxycodone on six occasions, a Schedule II controlled substance, outside the usual course of professional practice from February 13, 2014 to June 11, 2015.
According to the indictment, Garner also omitted material information from an application for a Drug Enforcement Agency registration number on January 14, 2016.
Garner faces a maximum total sentence of up to 124 years of incarceration, a fine of $6,250,000, a term of supervised release of three years, or both, under federal law.
The investigation was conducted by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, with Assistant United States Attorney Cindy K. Chung prosecuting the case on behalf of the government.
The indictment is a serious allegation that will be vigorously prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
The case is a reminder that prescription painkillers are highly addictive and can have devastating consequences when used outside of a legitimate medical practice.
