Daniel Hill, 44, of Baltimore, Maryland, is headed to federal prison for a decade after being caught with a stolen .44 caliber handgun used in an armed robbery. U.S. District Judge James K. Bredar handed down the 10-year sentence, followed by three years of supervised release, after Hill pleaded guilty to the federal firearms charge.
The crime unfolded on October 14, 2014, when three Baltimore Police Department officers on patrol spotted Hill and a woman standing in the 2100 block of Booth Street. The woman appeared frightened. When the officers moved in, Hill turned and ran. Police chased him through a narrow alley and took him into custody within moments.
Victim statements painted a chilling picture: Hill had brandished a black handgun, demanded cash, and walked away with three $20 bills. She told officers he hurled the weapon into the backyard of a nearby residence. Police recovered the .44 caliber handgun exactly where she said it would be—tossed behind a house on Booth Street.
A search of Hill’s person turned up the exact same three $20 bills—$60 total—stuffed in his left front pocket. During a recorded interview after waiving his rights, Hill admitted he had the gun. No denial. No alibi. Just a cold acknowledgment of possession.
Tracing the firearm revealed it had been reported stolen in Ohio—crossing state lines into the hands of a violent offender. That federal nexus triggered the U.S. Attorney’s involvement. Assistant U.S. Attorney John W. Sippel, Jr. prosecuted the case, underscoring the weapon’s illegal journey and Hill’s dangerous decision to wield it.
U.S. Attorney Rod J. Rosenstein credited the ATF’s Baltimore Field Division, the Baltimore Police Department, and State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby’s office for their relentless coordination. ‘This sentence sends a message,’ Rosenstein said. ‘Stolen guns fuel street violence—and we will pursue every link in that chain.’
