ASHLAND, OH – Jordie L. Callahan, 28, of Ashland, Ohio, will spend the next three decades behind bars after being sentenced to 30 years in prison for a brutal labor trafficking conspiracy. Callahan and his accomplice, Jessica L. Hunt, 33, held a woman with cognitive disabilities – identified in court documents as S.E. – and her child, B.E., against their will, forcing S.E. into years of manual labor and subjecting them both to horrific abuse.
The sentencing, handed down by U.S. District Judge Benita Y. Pearson, follows a three-week trial that laid bare the depravity of Callahan and Hunt’s actions. Both were convicted in March on one count each of conspiracy to violate laws; forced labor; and acquiring a controlled substance by deception. U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio, Steven M. Dettelbach, minced no words, stating Callahan “sought to deprive the victims…of their dignity and their freedom.” Dettelbach acknowledged the victim’s strength in surviving the ordeal, adding, “As for the freedom part – now it is the defendant whose freedom will be taken, for a long time.”
The scheme, which unfolded between August 2010 and October 2012, wasn’t simply about forced labor; it was fueled by drug addiction. Callahan, Hunt, and co-conspirators Daniel J. Brown, 35, and Dezerah L. McGuire (formerly Silsby), 33, intentionally injured S.E. – smashing her hand with a rock, injuring her back – to obtain the narcotic pain pills prescribed to her. They then forced her to hand over the drugs and prescriptions, exploiting her vulnerability for their own gratification. Brown is already serving a five-year federal prison sentence, while McGuire received nearly four years.
Court documents and trial testimony reveal a pattern of calculated cruelty. S.E. and B.E. were subjected to violence, threats, sexual assault, humiliation, and deprivation. They were forced to sleep in unsafe and unsanitary conditions, their access to basic necessities restricted. S.E. was made to eat dog food and crawl on the floor wearing a dog collar. Callahan even pointed a firearm at S.E.’s head, threatening to kill her if she didn’t comply with his demands and forcing her into sex acts while threatening to harm her if she revealed the abuse. The pair lured S.E. and B.E. into their Ashland apartment, knowing S.E.’s cognitive disability made her an easy target and that they received monthly public assistance payments.
“Hopefully this well-deserved lengthy sentence will provide a sense of justice that will assist the victims in their ongoing healing process,” stated Stephen D. Anthony, Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Cleveland office. The FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s office worked tirelessly to bring Callahan and Hunt to justice. While Callahan faces three decades in prison, Hunt is scheduled to be sentenced by Judge Pearson on July 24, and likely faces a substantial prison term of her own.
