GRIMY TIMES EXCLUSIVE: Akron’s notorious bank bandit, Robert E. Campbell Jr., 31, is facing a litany of charges including three bank robberies, carjacking, and firearms violations. According to Steven M. Dettelbach, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio, a federal grand jury has indicted Campbell on six counts.
Campbell is accused of hitting the Charter One Bank on East Waterloo Road, the First Merit Bank on Wedgewood Drive, and the US Bank on Manchester Road within a three-day span. His brazen tactics were captured on surveillance cameras that led to his identification by the Akron Police Department.
But Campbell’s spree didn’t end there. After being spotted, he carjacked a vehicle at gunpoint and took off in a low-speed chase through Kenmore. The escapade ended with two vehicles involved in a collision, injuring some of their occupants before Campbell was finally apprehended by the Summit County Sheriff’s Deputies.
Should Campbell be found guilty, his sentence will be determined by the Court based on various factors such as his prior criminal record and role in the offenses. However, it is important to note that an indictment is merely a charge and does not prove guilt.
The Assistant U.S. Attorney Teresa Dirksen is leading the prosecution of Campbell following an investigation involving the Akron Police Department, Federal Bureau of Investigation, U.S. Marshal’s Service, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, and the Summit County Sheriff’s Office.
Robert E. Campbell Jr. now awaits his fate in a courtroom where the government must prove its case beyond a reasonable doubt.
