A Bangor man has been sentenced to nearly six years in prison for his role in a bath salt distribution conspiracy.
According to court records, Daniel Hines, 38, of Bangor, was sentenced in U.S. District Court in Bangor to 70 months in prison and three years of supervised release for conspiracy to possess with the intent to distribute and to distribute MDPV, a chemical compound commonly referred to as ‘bath salts’ or ‘monkey dust.’
The conspiracy, which involved 18 defendants, was active between April and December 2011 and distributed large quantities of MDPV in Penobscot, Aroostook, and Knox counties, according to court records.
Hines obtained MDPV from other members of the conspiracy and traded, sold or otherwise distributed it to others. In November 2011, following the search of a co-conspirator’s residence in Bangor and the seizure of a large amount of MDPV, Hines assisted another person in removing from the residence MDPV that the police had not found during their search.
This additional quantity of MDPV was eventually distributed to another person, who was later caught by law enforcement.
The case was investigated by the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency with assistance from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, and the Brewer and Bangor Police Departments.
Hines is one of 18 defendants who pleaded guilty to conspiring with Ryan Ellis and others to distribute the drug. Ellis previously pleaded guilty and awaits sentencing.
