Danny James Heinrich, 53, of Annandale, Minn., was sentenced today to 20 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to receipt of child pornography—a plea that forced him to finally admit the truth: he abducted, sexually assaulted, and murdered 11-year-old Jacob Wetterling on October 22, 1989. The confession, delivered in a hushed courtroom, ended a 27-year silence that had haunted Minnesota and the Wetterling family, who endured decades of uncertainty and false leads.
Heinrich also admitted during his plea allocution to abducting and sexually assaulting 12-year-old J.S. on January 13, 1989. For years, he vanished into the margins of society, a ghost feeding a grotesque collection of child pornography. According to court filings, Heinrich possessed between 10 and 150 images of child sexual abuse, including prepubescent minors under the age of 12. Many depicted sadistic or masochistic conduct. Others were digitally altered—morphed child pornography—further evidence of a predator’s warped obsession.
“Today’s sentencing marks the close of a sad chapter in Minnesota history,” said U.S. Attorney Andrew M. Luger. “Danny Heinrich hurt countless lives, none more tragic than Jacob Wetterling.” Luger urged the public to remain vigilant, citing over 4 million online tips to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children last year. “Every child matters. Every second counts,” he said, urging anyone with a concern to call 1-800-THE-LOST or visit www.missingkids.com.
Special Agent in Charge Richard T. Thornton of the FBI’s Minneapolis Division emphasized the relentless effort behind the breakthrough. “Although solving this crime took decades, justice has been delivered.” The FBI, Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA), and Stearns County Sheriff’s Office never closed the book on Jacob’s case. Their dogged pursuit, fueled by forensic advances and public pressure, finally cornered Heinrich—whose remorse only surfaced when escape was impossible.
Stearns County Attorney Janelle P. Kendall called the victims’ statements during sentencing “heart rending.” For years, they pleaded for answers while Heinrich remained silent. “His regret only caused him to act when he’d been cornered,” she said. Yet she also praised the resilience of the survivors and the Wetterlings, whose advocacy transformed grief into the national movement Jacob’s Hope. “It has been an honor and privilege to know them through this experience,” Kendall added.
Heinrich was convicted on one count of receipt of child pornography. In addition to 20 years in federal prison, he will serve a lifetime of supervised release. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Steven L. Schleicher and Julie Allyn, with support from the Stearns County Attorney’s Office and the Department of Justice’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section. The investigation spanned generations—but law enforcement never walked away.
