A Dubuque man was sentenced to 15 months in federal prison for stealing a gun from a family member and possessing it while a methamphetamine user.
Darien Henkel, 23, from Dubuque, Iowa, received the prison term after pleading guilty to illegally possessing a firearm as a drug user.
According to statements at sentencing, authorities arrested Henkel on the same day he stole the gun from a family member. The gun was found in Henkel’s pants when he was arrested. Henkel also admitted to regular methamphetamine use.
Hanlkel was sentenced in Cedar Rapids by United States District Court Chief Judge C.J. Williams. He was sentenced to 15 months’ imprisonment and will serve a three-year term of supervised release after the prison term.
The case was brought as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime. The program focuses enforcement efforts on the most violent offenders and partners with locally based prevention and reentry programs.
The case is also part of Project Guardian, a Department of Justice initiative to reduce gun violence and enforce federal firearms laws. The program enhances coordination of federal, state, local, and tribal authorities in investigating and prosecuting gun crimes.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Jacob Schunk and investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Dubuque Police Department.
