Dario Giambro, Felon with Firearms, Maine 2023

PORTLAND, ME – Dario Giambro, 75, of Hebron, Maine, is facing a decade behind bars after a federal jury found him guilty of being a felon in possession of firearms. The conviction comes after a two-day trial in U.S. District Court, revealing a disturbing cache of weapons amassed by a man already prohibited from owning them.

In January 2022, Maine State Troopers raided Giambro’s Hebron residence, uncovering what investigators described as “hundreds” of firearms. The haul included a vast assortment – shotguns, rifles, pistols, and revolvers – alongside a substantial quantity of ammunition. This wasn’t a collector’s hobby; it was a clear violation of federal law.

Giambro’s history is the key to the charge. He was previously convicted in the District of Maine for possessing an unregistered firearm, a felony offense that permanently stripped him of the right to own weapons. Despite that prior conviction, Giambro allegedly built an arsenal, raising serious questions about how he obtained and stored the firearms. Investigators have not released details about the source of the weapons.

The case was a joint effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Maine State Police, with support from the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office and Norway Police Department. Federal prosecutors, led by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Nicholas Heimbach and Sean Green, successfully argued that Giambro knowingly violated the law, posing a potential threat to public safety.

Giambro now faces up to 10 years in prison, a hefty fine of up to $250,000, and up to 3 years of supervised release following his incarceration. A presentence investigation report will be prepared by the U.S. Probation Office before sentencing, allowing a federal district judge to consider the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other relevant factors when determining the final punishment.

The case highlights the ongoing struggle to keep firearms out of the hands of convicted felons. While the exact motivation behind Giambro’s actions remains unclear, the sheer volume of weapons seized suggests a deliberate disregard for the law and a potential danger to the community. Sentencing is pending, and Grimy Times will continue to follow this case.
