On September 8, 2016, Darnell Campbell, a 35-year-old resident of Chicago, Illinois, was indicted by a federal grand jury in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois (ILND Federal District) on multiple charges of violent crimes. The indictment alleged that Campbell was involved in a string of violent attacks on several individuals in the Windy City.
According to the indictment, Campbell was charged with two counts of attempted murder, two counts of assault with a deadly weapon, and one count of using a firearm during a crime of violence. The alleged victims were identified as James Johnson, a 42-year-old local businessman, and Emily Davis, a 28-year-old nurse.
The indictment stated that on July 15, 2016, Campbell allegedly shot Johnson multiple times in a parking lot near the intersection of 63rd Street and Halsted Avenue. The same indictment alleged that on August 20, 2016, Campbell assaulted Davis with a baseball bat in a residential area of the South Side.
Following a lengthy investigation by the FBI and the Chicago Police Department, Campbell was arrested on September 1, 2016, and subsequently charged with the above-mentioned crimes. The case drew widespread attention in the local media due to the severity of the alleged crimes.
On February 10, 2017, Campbell pleaded guilty to all charges in a plea agreement with the United States Attorney’s Office. He was subsequently sentenced to 20 years in federal prison by Judge Sharon Johnson Coleman. The court also ordered Campbell to pay restitution to his victims and to serve a 3-year term of supervised release upon his release from prison.
