A disturbing case of child abuse has shaken the community of Kyle, South Dakota. Darrell Janis, a 58-year-old man from the same town, has been sentenced for two counts of Abusive Sexual Contact.
The crime took place on December 11, 2015, when Janis used force to have sexual contact with a child, who was between the ages of 12 and 16, at Kyle.
Janis was indicted by a federal grand jury in October 2016, and after a trial in Federal District Court in Rapid City on May 11, 2017, he was found guilty.
According to the U.S. Attorney Randolph J. Seiler, the case was thoroughly investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety. Assistant U.S. Attorney Megan Poppen prosecuted the case.
Chief Judge Jeffrey L. Viken of the U.S. District Court sentenced Janis to 8 years in custody, followed by 5 years of supervised release, and ordered him to pay a $200 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
Janis was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service. This case serves as a reminder of the importance of holding perpetrators accountable for such heinous crimes.
