Cedar Rapids Man Sentenced to 10 Years in Prison for Threatening to Kill a Woman with a Firearm

A 29-year-old man from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm after threatening to kill a woman.

Darrell Junior Sims received the maximum sentence of 120 months’ imprisonment, a $100 special assessment, and a 2-year term of supervised release after the prison term.

The evidence at trial showed that during a phone call on January 27, 2017, Sims threatened to kill a female companion, telling her to look under her mattress where she found a loaded revolver and a loaded pistol.

When the woman asked what he planned to kill her with, Sims told her to look under her mattress. The woman contacted the United States Marshals Service, and two Deputy Marshals arrived and collected the firearms.

The case was investigated by the United States Marshals Service and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Dan Chatham.

Sims is currently being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison.

The case was heard in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Iowa, with Chief United States District Court Judge Leonard T. Strand presiding.
