An armed robber has been sentenced to over 15 years in federal prison for his role in two brazen robberies in Maryland.
Darrell Lee, 48, of Charlotte Hall, Maryland, was sentenced to 184 months in prison followed by five years of supervised release for robbery and for carrying and brandishing a gun during a robbery.
The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge Paul W. Grimm in the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland.
According to his plea agreement, Lee and Furman Troy entered a jewelry store in Charlotte Hall on June 18, 2014, where Lee brandished a gun at the store owner and Troy bound the victim with duct tape.
They stole jewelry worth approximately $8,890, cash, a laptop computer valued at approximately $2,100 and other items.
Just four days later, on June 22, 2014, Lee and Troy robbed a pharmacy in Mechanicsville, Maryland, where Lee brandished a gun and Troy bound the employee with duct tape.
They stole cash and prescription bottles containing oxycodone, methadone, hydrocodone and endocet, valued at approximately $8,997.
Lee’s accomplices, Furman Troy and Michael Burgess, and Abdelrahim Ayyad, have also been charged in connection with the robberies.
United States Attorney Rod J. Rosenstein commended the FBI, St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office and Maryland State Police for their work in the investigation, and recognized the St. Mary’s County State’s Attorney’s Office for its assistance in the case.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Leah J. Bressack.
Darrell Lee’s exact criminal charges include robbery and carrying and brandishing a gun during a robbery.
The total restitution ordered to be paid by Lee is $24,791.50, and he must also forfeit $19,987.
The case is a stark reminder of the dangers of armed robbery and the importance of community cooperation in bringing perpetrators to justice.
