CLEVELAND, Ohio – The General Crimes Unit of the United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Ohio has been working diligently to reduce violent crime rates in the region. One notable operation was the Violent Crime Reduction Operation, which resulted in the seizure of over 255 firearms, including 47 traced back to other crimes and 17 untraceable firearms, also known as “ghost guns.”

Darvell Jackson, a defendant in the Violent Crime Reduction Operation, was sentenced to 168 months in prison for various federal firearms violations. The operation was led by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) and resulted in the charging of 84 defendants, with 70 being charged federally and 14 facing state charges. Sixty of those defendants entered guilty pleas, with 49 being sentenced to date.

The operation also highlighted the importance of the Crime Gun Intelligence Center (CGIC), which was opened in the District in June 2024. The CGIC serves as a hub for federal and local law enforcement to investigate and prevent gun violence in the region. It utilizes cutting-edge technology and tracing systems to rapidly develop and pursue investigative leads.

“Driving down violent crime has, without a doubt, been one of our office’s top priorities,” said U.S. Attorney Rebecca Lutzko. “With the CGIC now fully operational, it allows us to connect the dots between crimes so we can prosecute, convict, and lock up the bad actors who commit violent crimes and remove “crime guns” from the streets faster, so neither continue to endanger innocent people in neighborhoods throughout Northern Ohio.”

Other notable cases in the Northern District of Ohio include U.S. v. Conner Walker, who was charged with the sexual exploitation and distribution of child pornography. Walker admitted to sexually abusing a two-year-old child, filming it on his phone, and distributing the video online. He is currently awaiting sentencing.

The USAO General Crimes Unit is committed to reducing violent crime rates in the Northern District of Ohio. Through its efforts, it has made significant strides in holding those accountable who commit violent crimes and removing “crime guns” from the streets.
