Davenport Drug Kingpin Sentenced to 25 Years for Fentanyl Overdose Death

DAVENPORT, Iowa – In a gritty twist of justice, Jarad Paul Postell, the 40-year-old drug kingpin of Davenport, faced the brunt of federal law enforcement on November 17, 2021. United States District Court Chief Judge John A. Jarvey doled out a stinging sentence of 25 years in federal prison for his role in a conspiracy that led to a fentanyl overdose death. Postell was also sentenced to five years of supervised release after his time behind bars, ordered to fork over $100 to the Crime Victims’ Fund, and pay a substantial $15,969.75 in restitution to his codefendants.

Postell’s descent into criminal infamy began when Davenport Police Department officers were called to Genesis West Hospital for a drug overdose on September 2019. The victim was pronounced dead upon arrival. Cops quickly identified the vehicle that dropped off the victim, leading them to Postell at a local casino in Bettendorf. During a post-Miranda interview with law enforcement, Postell confessed to meeting the victim and conspiring with another co-defendant to obtain fentanyl labeled as heroin.

The deadly concoction was used by the victim, who quickly lost consciousness. Amidst failed attempts to reverse the overdose with Narcan, Postell drove the stricken man to the hospital, but it was too late. The 40-year-old faced a jury trial on June 11, 2021, and was found guilty of all charges against him.

United States Attorney Richard D. Westphal of the Southern District of Iowa announced the sentence, emphasizing the severity of Postell’s crime. The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Bettendorf Police Department played pivotal roles in the investigation that led to this high-profile conviction and sentencing.

The case underscores the deadly reach of fentanyl in Iowa and across the nation. Postell’s sentence serves as a stark reminder of the consequences for those who traffic in drugs that claim innocent lives.
