A Watersmeet man has been sentenced to federal prison for his role in a near-fatal assault on a woman. David Kel Baldwin Jr, 45, was sentenced to 41 months in federal prison for assault resulting in serious bodily injury, announced Acting U.S. Attorney Andrew Birge.
In addition to the prison term, U.S. District Judge Paul L. Maloney ordered Baldwin to serve three years of supervised release following his prison term, to pay a $2,000 fine, and to pay a $100 special assessment. Baldwin pleaded guilty to the charge on February 2, 2017.
The assault occurred on August 12, 2016, and left the victim with serious bodily injury. The victim, an enrolled member of the Lac Vieux Desert Tribe, was beaten with Baldwin’s hands at a residence located on Lac Vieux Desert reservation lands.
If not treated promptly by medical personnel, the victim would likely have died as a result of her injuries. The Lac Vieux Desert Tribal Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation investigated the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Paul D. Lochner prosecuted the case.
The sentencing of Baldwin is a significant step in holding perpetrators of violent crimes accountable for their actions. As a community, we must work together to ensure that those who commit such crimes are brought to justice.
The case is a reminder of the importance of reporting crimes to the authorities and seeking help when needed. If you or someone you know is a victim of a crime, please do not hesitate to reach out to the authorities for assistance.
