BUFFALO, N.Y. – A New York City man has been sentenced to six months in prison for illegally accessing hundreds of Snapchat accounts and sending nude photos to himself.
David Mondore, 30, of New York, New York, was convicted of accessing a protected computer without authorization and, by means of such conduct, furthering the intended fraud and obtaining anything of value, according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of New York.
Mondore gained unauthorized access to, and control of, Snapchat accounts belonging to third parties between July 2018 and August 2020. After doing so, he often located nude ‘selfie’ photos saved in the victims’ ‘My Eyes Only’ folder, which he then saved to his own phone.
Mondore admits that he gained unauthorized access to at least 300 Snapchat accounts belonging to victims both in the Western District of New York and elsewhere.
The sentencing is the result of an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, under the direction of Special Agent-in-Charge Stephen Belongia.
Mondore’s case highlights the importance of protecting online security and the consequences of accessing protected computers without authorization.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of New York has taken a strong stance against cybercrime, and this sentencing demonstrates their commitment to holding perpetrators accountable for their actions.
As a reminder, accessing protected computers without authorization is a serious crime that can result in severe penalties, including prison time and fines.
The Western District of New York is committed to keeping its residents safe from cyber threats, and this case serves as a warning to those who would seek to exploit online vulnerabilities for their own gain.
