Dawnn Marie Walters, Conspiracy to Gain Unauthorized Access, New York 2023

Swatting Scare: Rochester Woman Sentenced for Role in High-Stakes Hoax

Rochester, NY – In a disturbing case of cybercrime, 53-year-old Dawnn Marie Walters has been sentenced to one year of probation, including six months of home detention, for her involvement in a swatting incident in the Rochester area.

According to Assistant U.S. Attorney Franz M. Wright, the incident occurred in August 2023 when law enforcement received a false report of a hostage situation at the residence of C.F., a targeted individual. The caller, who was later identified as a co-conspirator, provided C.F.’s parents’ address as the location of the incident, sparking a massive response from local SWAT teams.

The investigation, led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Orleans County Sheriff’s Office, uncovered a series of online conversations between Walters and her co-conspirators. In one conversation, Walters agreed to assist the co-conspirator in accessing C.F.’s online accounts, including her personal email account.

With Walters’ assistance, the co-conspirator was able to gain access to C.F.’s email account and send threatening emails to multiple Monroe County Legislators and New York State Assembly members. The emails, which included C.F.’s name, telephone number, and photographs of deceased children, were meant to cause law enforcement to investigate C.F. as the primary suspect.

The swatting incident was a classic example of how cybercrime can have real-world consequences. The incident highlights the need for greater vigilance and cooperation between law enforcement agencies to prevent such hoaxes from occurring in the future.

Walters’ sentencing is a result of a joint investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, under the direction of Acting Special Agent-in-Charge Mark Grimm, and the Orleans County Sheriff’s Office, under the direction of Sheriff Christopher Bourque.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Colleen D. Holland presided over the sentencing hearing, imposing the sentence of one year of probation, including six months of home detention.

The case serves as a reminder of the importance of online accountability and the need for individuals to be mindful of their online activities.
