DC Man Sentenced to 10 Years for 14-Round Gun Barrage at MPD Officer

A brazen and brazenly armed Washington D.C. man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for firing 14 rounds at a Metropolitan Police Department officer.

38-year-old Saeve Edward Evans of Washington D.C. was handed down the sentence by U.S. District Judge Reggie B. Walton after pleading guilty to assault on a police officer while armed, and unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition by a person convicted of a crime punishable by imprisonment for a term of over one year.

The shooting occurred in the early morning hours of August 1, 2023, at 1711 Benning Road, a three-story apartment building in Northeast Washington D.C. Evans was walking a dog in the courtyard when he pulled out a gun and fired three rounds into the air after an unknown individual walked in front of the building.

Three minutes later, an MPD officer arrived at the scene and was confronted by Evans, who yelled at the officer to ‘come and get it’ before firing three more rounds at the officer. Evans continued to fire, unleashing 11 more rounds at the officer as he moved up a ramp, and then two more shots at the officer through large windows on the third-floor landing.

Additional MPD officers responded to the scene and entered the building, where they located Evans on the third-floor landing. Before his arrest, Evans claimed ‘Ain’t no gun, I took it off me,’ but officers recovered the firearm, a black Springfield XD 9×19 pistol with an empty 16-round magazine, which was linked to Evans through DNA evidence. The gun was also found to be stolen on March 9, 2023, from the state of Texas.

U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves and Chief Pamela A. Smith of the Metropolitan Police Department praised the bravery and professionalism of the MPD officers involved in the incident, who were able to apprehend Evans without injury to themselves or the public. The case was investigated by the Metropolitan Police Department and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Justin Song and former Assistant U.S. Attorney Colin Cloherty.

Saeve Edward Evans is set to serve 5 years of supervised release in addition to his 10-year prison term. The brazen and violent attack on the MPD officer serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement officers on a daily basis.
