CLEVELAND, OH – A Cleveland woman with a horrific past just added a federal prison sentence to her mounting legal woes. India N. Parker, 37, was sentenced to 16 months behind bars for pilfering over $41,000 in government benefits – money meant for the very child whose remains she callously discarded like trash.
The sentencing, handed down by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Ohio, comes after Parker already faces time in state prison for a truly disturbing crime: offenses against a human corpse, tampering with evidence, and criminal mischief. Details of that case reveal a depraved indifference to human life, specifically, the life of her own five-year-old daughter.
Court documents paint a chilling picture. Parker’s daughter died in late 2006. Instead of providing a proper burial, Parker allowed the child’s body to decompose before stuffing it into a trash bag and leaving it in a garbage can on her front lawn. A garbage truck ultimately hauled the remains away, and the child was never recovered. While concealing the death from friends, family, and investigators, Parker systematically stole $40,236 in Social Security payments intended for her deceased daughter and an additional $1,393 in food stamp benefits.
Parker pleaded guilty earlier this year to two counts of theft of government property and five counts of making false statements in U.S. District Court. She brazenly lied to agency representatives, claiming her daughter was still alive and living with her – a calculated deception designed to keep the stolen benefits flowing. The fraud continued for years, a grotesque exploitation of a tragedy.
