On a fateful Monday night in April 1924, the city of Atlanta witnessed yet another senseless tragedy. DeWitt Swoffard, a 7-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. S.H. Swoffard, lost his life in a horrific collision with a speeding car driven by L.F. Moody. The devastating accident occurred in the Lakewood Heights area near the Jones Pigg road.
Moody’s vehicle, an 8-cylinder machine, was traveling at an alarming speed when it struck DeWitt. Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with the child being flung onto the pavement. Moody, in a state of panic, stopped momentarily before rushing DeWitt to Grady hospital, where the young boy succumbed to his injuries three hours later.
Medical examination revealed a fractured skull, one eye knocked from its socket, and a broken right hip. The child’s parents were notified and were by his side when the end came. Lieutenant Jordan of the county police force was quick to respond, arresting Moody at the hospital and charging him with manslaughter.
The incident has left the community reeling, with many questioning the reckless behavior of drivers in the city. As the investigation unfolds, one thing is certain – justice must prevail for the Swoffard family and the people of Atlanta.
