ATLANTA – Ismail Ali Khan, a 29-year-old from Decatur, Georgia, has been stripped of his U.S. citizenship and faces deportation following a conviction for importing illegal male enhancement pills and falsely claiming he had no criminal history on his citizenship application.
Khan was sentenced to five years, seven months in federal prison after being convicted of conspiring to import and distribute the counterfeit Viagra-like drugs, authorities reported.
“This defendant endangered the health of countless individuals by illegally importing and distributing drugs that can be obtained in the U.S. only with a prescription,” said U.S. Attorney John Horn. “Khan’s fraudulent citizenship application was just the cherry on top of his illicit drug scheme.”
Horn explained that Khan and his co-conspirators imported male enhancement pills from China, including those labeled as ‘Maxman’ and ‘Herb Viagra,’ which contained the same active ingredient as Viagra. These pills were distributed throughout the U.S., circumventing import restrictions by mislabeling boxes to appear as legal items like beauty products or tea.
Over a three-year conspiracy that ended in May 2014, Khan’s gang brought more than $1.5 million worth of illegal drugs into the country, authorities said.
While the drug conspiracy was underway, Khan submitted a citizenship application claiming he had never committed a crime for which he had not been arrested. He continued to lie about his criminal history during interviews with Citizenship and Immigration Services. On March 14, 2014, Khan became a naturalized U.S. citizen despite these lies.
“American consumers are put at serious risk when they are unknowingly exposed to undeclared active pharmaceutical ingredients in products falsely labeled as natural dietary supplements,” said Justin Green of the FDA Office of Criminal Investigations. “FDA remains committed to pursuing those who endanger public health.”
