MIAMI – A Miami man has been sentenced to 30 years in federal prison for unlawfully possessing a firearm and ammunition as an armed career criminal.
In a shocking display of violence, Demetris Kewan Mackie, 29, of Miami, Florida, used the same gun to shoot at two victims over an eight-day span, injuring one. The brutal attacks sparked an investigation that led to Mackie’s downfall.
According to court records, on April 12, 2023, Mackie pistol-whipped and shot a male victim outside a laundromat in Miami. The victim, who was left bloodied on the ground, later provided a detailed description of Mackie to police.
The next day, North Miami Beach Police Department officers responded to another shooting, where the victim was unharmed and able to identify Mackie as the attacker. Three days later, on April 20, 2023, Miami-Dade Police Department officers arrested Mackie, who was found carrying a silver-topped gun matching the one used in the attacks.
The ATF Miami Field Office, with assistance from the Miami-Dade Police Department and the North Miami Beach Police Department, investigated the case. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Zachary A. Keller and Vanessa Bonhomme prosecuted the case.
U.S. Attorney Markenzy Lapointe for the Southern District of Florida and Special Agent in Charge Christopher A. Robinson of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), Miami Field Division announced the sentence imposed by U.S. District Judge Rodolfo A. Ruiz II.
The sentence comes after a jury convicted Mackie in October 2023. Mackie will serve 30 years in federal prison, followed by five years of supervised release, for his crimes.
Mackie’s crimes are a stark reminder of the dangers of gun violence and the importance of holding perpetrators accountable. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and provide updates as more information becomes available.
