A Macon man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to murdering and burning his victim. Demetrius L. Smith was sentenced on March 25, 2024 in Bibb County Superior Court. According to the District Attorney’s office, Smith pleaded guilty to malice murder and aggravated assault in connection with the death of his victim.
The victim’s body was found in a burned-out vehicle in a wooded area in Macon in January 2023. An investigation by the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation led to Smith’s arrest and subsequent guilty plea.
The sentence was handed down by Judge Timothy P. Walmsley. The District Attorney’s office said that the sentence reflects the seriousness of the crime and the need to hold perpetrators accountable for their actions.
