A 17-year wrongful conviction has come to an end for Demetrius Rhoades, a Detroit man who was sentenced to life in prison for a 2005 murder.
Rhoades was convicted of first-degree murder and felony firearm possession in connection with the death of 23-year-old Jamil Hill, who was shot and killed in a Detroit alleyway.
However, new DNA evidence has led to Rhoades’ exoneration, with prosecutors dropping the charges against him.
The Michigan Innocence Clinic, a law school clinic at the University of Michigan, took on Rhoades’ case and worked to prove his innocence through DNA analysis.
A source reports that Rhoades was released from prison on March 22, 2023, after serving nearly two decades for a crime he did not commit.
